Abstract

Every January the 2nd since 1927, Mexican police forces celebrated themselves during the date decreed for that aim. It was a secondary ritual due to the dubious support it had beyond the police. This article analyses the Police-Day celebration in Mexico, fundamentally driven by the police department official magazines. Through its pages is possible to understand the construction of an esprit the corpse that blurred the differences within a set of socially heterogeneous corporations marked with inequalities among its members, but also with evident distinctions depending on whether they were municipal or federal, and whether they were focused on security and urban public order or secret surveillance or judicial. Thus, it is a study of police cultures, identities and representations.
