Abstract

On May 31, 1968, the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) of the Argentine Republic and the Siemens Aktiengesellschaft company of the German Federal Republic signed a contract for the construction and installation of a power plant fed by a nuclear reactor. The signing of this contract is the most important event that occurred in the development of atomic energy in Argentina and constitutes a fundamental stage in the process of inserting nuclear science and technology into the very fabric of this society. It is very timely, then, to carry out a critical analysis of that process and a balance of its successes and failures, thus trying to explain Argentine atomic policy.
