Abstract

The special vulnerability of indigenous peoples in the Arctic has increased in recent decades due to various environmental challenges. On the one hand, global warming is causing the melting of this region and the lack of important natural resources for these peoples. These changes will not only affect their quality of life, but also to their cultural identity, since climatic conditions in which its existence has developed over the centuries are changing very rapidly. On the other hand, the European Union has adopted a series of trade measures prohibiting the importation and marketing of seal products in its territory, although it allows the trade of seal products when captured by Inuit communities. The exception was introduced to protect them since seal hunting is an important element of their culture and their survival, but its compatibility with the law of the World Trade Organization has been challenged.

Licenciada y Doctora en Derecho por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. M.A. en Relaciones Internacionales por el Instituto Universitario de Investigación Ortega y Gasset de Madrid y Diplomada por el Centre d’Études et de Recherche de Droit International et de Relations Internationales de la Academia de Derecho Internacional de La Haya. Es Profesora Titular de Derecho Internacional Público y Relaciones Internacionales en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. También ha sido representante de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid en el Comité de Derecho del Proyecto de la Fundación Campus Europae (Luxemburgo)

Rosa María Fernández Egea, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

Doctora en Derecho y Master en Derecho Comunitario Europeo por la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Ha investigado en diversos centros extranjeros, entre otros, en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Hamburgo, la sede de la OMC en Ginebra y en el Centro de Estudios e Investigación en Derecho Internacional y Relaciones Internacionales de la Academia de La Haya de Derecho Internacional. La Profesora Fernández Egea ha sido beneficiaria de varias becas competitivas (Becaria FPU y Becaria del programa Deutsche Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD/ La Caixa). Actualmente es profesora ayudante de Derecho Internacional Público de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
