Based on the confirmation of fiction components in the origin of the portrait, as well as its historical relationship with coat of arms and masks, we find similarly in autobiography a prevalence of rhetorical devices over elements of reference. The avant-garde, playfully assuming these facts, sets a precedent for the modern practice of autofiction. The common thread of this journey is the allegory, which we will see illustrated in two Argentine writers: Macedonio Fernández and César Aira.
