Abstract

Conversación con Salvador Allende, the interview that Régis Debray held to Allende in Santiago de Chile after his release from the prison of Camiri, Bolivia, in the late 1970s, was published throughout 1971 in distant cities of the planet in publishing houses linked to the new intellectual left. In spite of this synchronization, the printed versions of the dialogue led to dissimilar readings of the Chilean road to socialism through its editorials options. Even so, the publication implied more than a strategic discussion. Debray was already a celebrity in the regional and international public sphere. Besides being a political bestseller, he was also the protagonist of both serious and sensationalist newspapers, since his detention in Bolivia. The Argentinean press reproduced fragments of the conversation published in Chile by the magazine Punto Final, which defined the publication as an “international journalistic coup”. The press version and the pocket book reinforced each other. The discussion about the Chilean road to socialism crossed not only a spatial border, but also the border which separated different kinds readers
