Indigenous community and gamonalism: the crisis of the hacienda regime in Chimborazo (1950-1990)

Abstract

Through history, landowners, have been represented as powerful, key figures who have influenced the social, economic and political processes of Ecuador since colonial times. This perception of absolutist hacienda patterns have contributed to the invisibility of other relevant figures from rurality, spaces in which social interactions were extremely complex because the presence of indigenous peasant communities altered, according to the conjunctures, the pre-established order by the landowners. The purpose of this article is analyze the crisis of gamonalism in Columbe, province of Chimborazo, a place in which the haciendas were a gravitating factor within the social dynamics; will be analyze the role of indigenous communities and their repertoires to the detriment of the gamonales.
